Born from her love of winter accessories, Sundae Crochet Co is a Portage Park local maker we love. Why? Her products are made from the warmest and softest chunky yarns. We’re grateful that Sundae Crochet Co maker and owner Jaclyn Crawford sat down to chat with us a bit about her company, what inspires her and the not one, but many Chicago restaurants she think you must try.
1) What makes your company unique?
My goal upon starting Sundae Crochet Co was to create usable and functional crochet items that were always in style. It originally came from my love of big, warm chunky scarves and then slowly grew into other areas, such as bath products.
2) How did you start making?
My grandmother on my Mom’s side had been crocheting for as long as I could remember. Once I was out of college, I began exploring different hobbies to try. I went over to her house and asked her to teach me. It was then, I was hooked (pun intended.) She's an amazing crochet artist, basically a machine, and I hope one day, I can be just like her! Shortly after I learned how to crochet, I began going through a really tough period of life, both physically and mentally. When I felt stressed or anxious, I practiced my stitches that she taught me. (Side Note: making, of any kind, is incredible for your mental health. While it should never replace therapy, it's a great strategy to have if you’re going through a challenging time.)
As someone who’s has more scarves than I can count, it was only natural that the first thing I started crafting was my cowl scarves. I started making for family and friends, and then eventually got up enough courage to sell at my first Tea'se Tea Shoppe pop-up! Since then, I’ve been in love with making products for all to enjoy!
3) What inspires you as a maker?
As a fiber artist, I draw a lot of inspiration from the yarn I am using. I’m highly inspired by color and texture. I’ll never work with a yarn I don’t like!
I also love attending markets, I get a lot of inspiration from the people I meet and the other makers I interact with. It's wonderful getting to see people experience yarn the same way I do. :)
4) What are two things you'd like customers to know about you?
One thing would be that the name comes from my two year old puppy, Sundae. She’s always close by when I’m crocheting. You’ll never meet a sweeter pup!
The second thing would be that I absolutely love my neighborhood. I’ve lived in Chicago for 10 years now and have lived in several neighborhoods during that time. We had the opportunity to move to Portage Park in 2016 and it's definitely the best neighborhood I’ve ever lived it. There’s a wonderful community spirit here, along with a beautiful park to hangout and tons of local shops that I just love.
5) What's a new project you're excited about?
I recently got a shipment of 100% Peruvian wool in from Wool And The Gang that I can't wait to turn into some beautiful new scarves!
6) What's on your playlist as you're creating?
Usually, I'm more of a Netflix and crochet person. I just finished season 2 of The Crown and am now working my way through The Paradise. However, if my husband (Keith Crawford Designs) isn't downstairs in his wood shop, we’re usually watching The Office or Parks and Rec.
However, on the rare occasion I am crocheting and listening to music, the latest Kygo album, Sam Feldt and the newest Justin Timberlake song have been on my top playlist.
