As you already know, we’re huge fans of Chicago here at Collectiv. That’s one of the reasons we love Kim, owner of Neighborhood Goodz. She makes a variety of items, such as pins, canvas and wood signs that are the perfect addition to your home if you want to share your Chicago pride. Not to mention, she makes a variety of other fun, trendy items that are sure to make a statement.
We’re so happy to feature Neighborhood Goodz on the blog this week, as she’s also a local maker here in Portage Park. See what she has to say about what inspires her to create and how she decides what music she’s crafting to!
1) What makes your company unique?
When I do markets, people are often surprised that I make all the items myself. I think that is something special about Neighborhood Goodz. There are many elements of creating that I love doing, ranging from working with paints on canvas to designing pins to everything in between.
2) How did you start making?
Honestly, I can't even remember. For most of my life, I was not crafty and didn't really enjoy trying to be. It wasn't until after I got married that I got into it; I think I was trying to beautify my house without spending a lot of money. A lot of products also got started because of Christmas...I like the concept of either locally purchased or handmade gifts, so I started making things for my family.
3) What inspires you as a maker?
I always feel really great after completing a project and I want to pass that sense of accomplishment on to my daughters. One of them is just a baby right now, but the other will be 4 in August and she loves sitting and watching me make things. She also loves coming to visit me at markets and wants to be my helper :) She is a huge inspiration to me, as I want to show her what it means to do the best you can and have a strong work ethic.
4) What are two things you'd like customers to know about you?
5) What's a new project you're excited about?
I'm hoping to start hosting classes/workshops for different DIY projects in the near future. I've been wanting to get that going for some time now!
6) What's on your playlist as you're creating?
It varies. If I'm making things after the kids are in bed, lately it's a '90s alternative mix. If the kids are with me in the craft room, then...the Sing or Wizard of Oz soundtracks.
7) Let's keep it local, what Chicago restaurant do you think everyone must try?
Sabatino's. There are a lot of great new restaurants in the neighborhood, but Sabatino's is classic Italian and has been a staple in the area for over 40 years. It's a solid meal with a great old-school vibe. I've always had great food there and the pizza bread they give you as a small appetizer is delicious!
