Beauty, thoughtfulness and function could be a few words used to describe Mojo Owl. As she says below, “It requires some meditation to get all the right materials together. I’m not fast jewelry.” That’s why we’re proud to include Mojo Owl as one of our resident makers at Collectiv. See what got her started in jewelry making as well as where her taste in music comes from.
1. What Makes Your Company Unique?
Me and my knowledge of gemstones and the stories. I'm very intuitive about putting gems together and being a Reiki master is a nice extra when it comes to designing pieces for people. I enjoying finding the best stones for clients and the clients really appreciate when I do that for them. Sometimes it takes a while but it's worth it when I finally get something together for that person. Sometimes, the process is fast but other times, it requires some meditation to get all the right materials together. I'm not fast jewelry. I am trying to make beautiful objects that might become heirlooms one day.
2. How Did You Start Making?
I've been making jewelry as a teenager when one day I walked into "The Goldsmith" at the WaterTower and asked if I could apprentice. At the time, it was owned by a character who called himself "The Donald." So, I worked there the whole summer and learned about gemstones and hand knotting pearls. Then after that, I got the bug and took metalsmithing classes. I used to make the Jewelry for Primitive Art Works and I worked there for about 8 yrs. Then, I stopped making big pieces and just now a little under 2 years, I restarted making gemstone pieces but in a very different handmade way. Nowadays, my style is a little bit more simple but pretty and I like to use real and natural gemstones. some new but old gems and broken vintage is fun to incorporate and it helps recycle the materials.
3. What inspires you as a maker?
I am inspired by moods, color, and beauty. I like to create pieces that have an air of wistfulness and dreams about them. I love pretty and beautiful. I like the idea that someone loves what I made and they are inspired by the gems and happy when they wear them. Just recently, I had made a cloud necklace that I called "The rainbow after the storm has passed" and I met a mother and daughter who fell in love with it because the Mother told me that the daughter's name means the same thing.
4. What are 2 things I'd like customers to know about You?
That I am also a Craniosacral Therapy Practitioner and I see clients and I love doing it. It's a very gentle method for helping the body restore itself to health and that I give very spot on Intuitive readings. I've been doing that work for over 20 years under NowStudio.co.
5. What’s a new project you are excited about?
I'm exploring ideas of working with gemstones. I don't want to say too much about it as I'm kind of superstitious about revealing something that hasn't happened yet.
6. What’s on your playlist as you’re creating?
My love of music started young, as my dad always played a lot of music around the house on the weekends. Lots of classical, Beetles, The Carpenter's. that still influences me but I really love music with lyrics I can sing too. Any Bryan Ferry his Roxy Music always makes me happy, it's sexy and fun vibes. Peter Gabriel's album So, is something I play often because it reminds me of carefree summer I spent on a sailboat in the Caribbean. New people I like are Foster the People, their album Torches. Camila Cabello, her album with the song Havana makes me want to get up and dance. Lately, I have been listening to old disco music :)
7. Let's keep it local. What's a restaurant everyone must try?
I honestly don't go out a lot. I'm a decent cook and I like to good healthy eats. I make amazing rice tortas with leftover rice and veggies. I recently discovered Uptons's breakroom. It's all vegan meats and they have a little place that uses their products and it's pretty good. I also like the Chicago Diner, I usually go to the one in Logan Square, where I get to treat myself with French fries and their Vegan Milkshakes that you would never know aren't made with milk. So good!
