Here at Collectiv, we’re all about finding what’s unique. That’s why we love Mikey Made It! This company produces paper garland unlike anything we’ve ever seen. With an attention to detail (For example, The Easter garland has chocolate bunnies and every other bunny has a bite out of its ear, how cute is that?!) and a use of color that makes every design pop, we’re excited to introduce you to one of our newest additions to the shop, Mikey Made It. Here’s what he had to say about his work and what paper garland is in the works currently.
1) What makes your company unique?
Mikey Made It is a one-of-a-kind garland company. the paper garlands we produce are unlike anything else on the market. The designs are thoughtfully created and not without their own level of whimsy. Locally produced in Chicago, they are all individually handmade, sewn and packaged.
2) How did you start making?
Mikey was working as a set decorator for a nationally syndicated television show and created a large scale sewn paper installation for a segment. With that inspiration under his belt, a few months later, he made sewn paper decorations for his parent's 70th birthday party. These decorations were repurposed in window displays at the Andersonville Galleria. After more than a dozen people asked where to purchase the decorations, Mikey began producing and selling his garlands at the Galleria itself.
3) What inspires you as a maker?
Simplicity. Clean lines. Bold colors. Cleverness. Silhouettes.
4) What are two things you'd like customers to know about you?
Mikey's a gemini and enjoys a beer or three.
5) What's a new project you're excited about?
Mikey is currently working on a multi layered floral garland design.
6) What's on your playlist as you're creating?
Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox and showtunes. Hundreds of garlands have been made while Mikey sings along to showtunes over the hum of the sewing machine.
7) Let's keep it local, what Chicago restaurant do you think everyone must try?
If you've never been to Tweet Let's Eat, where have you been? Best brunch in town hands down.
